The Debate: Should The Air Jordan 11 Space Jam Make A Return This Year

Near the end of 2015 we began hearing rumors and speculation that the 2016 Air Jordan 11 holiday release may be the extremely popular Air Jordan 11 Space Jam. Why this year? Well because the movie in which the sneakers first appeared (Space Jam) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Can you believe that it has been 20 years since Space Jame released in theaters? When I sit down and really think about that I realize that I’m not as young as I think I am anymore. So when you think about it, bringing back the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam this year makes perfect sense. Since last year’s Air Jordan 11 holiday release didn’t sell out instantly like we’ve been used to seeing the few years prior, maybe Jordan Brand wants to go back to their bread an butter and release a colorway that they know sneakerheads are sure to go crazy for.

According to the account that posted this picture, this is a 2016 sample pair of the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam. Now why would there be a 2016 sample pair of Space Jams if Jordan Brand isn’t planning on bringing back the shoe this year? I’m not sure I can answer that which leads us to believe even more that these rumors could be true.

But wait, is it a good or bad idea to bring back the Space Jams this year? Some people will say yes it’s a great idea and some will say no.

So first let’s take a look into why some people think this is a bad idea and shouldn’t happen.

The Air Jordan 11 Space Jam has only released two times in its existence. We have the first original release in 2000 and the retro in 2009. Michael Jordan did debut the shoe in the 1995 playoffs when he came out of retirement the first time, but the shoes didn’t release to the public until 2000. If you’re fortunate enough to own one of those pairs then consider yourself lucky because not many people do.

Now ask yourself this question, did you have to pay an arm and a leg to get one of those pairs? If you did I’m sure you weren’t too excited about the resell price that you dished out on the kicks. Other people may think that it’s a bad idea to bring back the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam because their pair(s) will no longer be as rare and exclusive as they are now. Because who wants to have a shoe that everyone else does, right? (WRONG!) Another complaint is the price. The 2000 pair retailed for $125, the 2009 pair went for $175 which means that this possible 2016 pair will retail for how much? $225? $230? After taxes we’ll end up paying close to $250 for a pair of shoes. That’s double what the shoes cost back in 2000.air-jordan-11-space-jam-replica-01

Now, why would it be a good idea for the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam to return this year? Well like I mentioned before, there has only been two times when the shoes have released, 2000 and 2009. What if you weren’t into sneakers yet or didn’t have the money to afford them during both of those times? Not everybody was old enough or had the opportunity to purchase a pair during those two releases. I personally was 10 and 19 years old during each of the releases and during the first I really didn’t care about shoes (since I was a kid) and the second time even if I wanted a pair I wouldn’t have been able to afford them. Now that I’m 25 years old I’m fortunate enough to buy them and I would love to get my hands on a pair. And even if they do retail for $230 plus tax, isn’t that much better than the $600+ you’re forced to pay on the secondary market for a new or almost new pair at the moment?

The point is that you’re always going to have people arguing/making a case for both sides of the coin. In my opinion I think it’s a good idea for Jordan Brand to bring back the Space Jams. It’ll be just the 3rd release in 16 years, everyone who missed out or desperately wants a pair will be able to get one now, and it would be a great celebration for the 20th anniversary of Space Jam. All you have to do is watch this clip to see that it’s true.
